Although California favors pop and rap songs, Vista students say that it can get very irritating due to them persistently playing on radio stations. Songs like “Closer” by The Chainsmokers featuring Hasley, “Starboy” by The Weeknd featuring Daft Punk, and “Heathens” by Twenty-One Pilots are some of the songs that students said play way too much and are overrated.

Also, songs like “24k Magic” by Bruno Mars, “Don’t Let Me Down” by The Chainsmokers featuring Daya, and “Gold” by Kiiara may be enjoyable at first, but “get old really quick because of the constant replay,” said Vista del Lago senior Kasia McCann. “Most all super popular songs now are really annoying and they’re not original,” said McCann, who’s in Vista’s Master Guitar class.

Spencer Kolstad, who also takes Master Guitar, said, “I don’t even listen to the radio to the radio because I don’t want any songs I may like to get ruined for me.”

Cassidy Merlo, a senior will listen to them when they come on the radio, but not on her own. “It’s not that I don’t like them or they’re bad songs…they’re just not my favorite,” said Merlo.

Music is a very personal thing and not everyone has the same preference. An emotional attachment can be the reason for a favorite song choice. McCann said her favorite genre of music is Country. “I don’t have a favorite artist…there’s too many to choose from. If I had to pick, I’d choose Chris Stapleton because his style is very classic,” said McCann. And her favorite song by Chris is “Fire Away”.

Kolstad isn’t much of a country person but loves alternative music. His favorite artist is Van Halen. “I love the song Eruption by Van [Halen] because it’s challenging to play on my guitar and it pushes my limits.” Merlo doesn’t have any favorite artist or

Merlo, on the other hand, doesn’t have any favorite artist or song. “why limit it to one?” said Merlo. However, Merlo does enjoy “We Got Love” by Walk Off The Earth because it brings back good memories for her.
