According to the Clark County Coroner in Las Vegas, his death occurred by suicide, with the official cause listed as a gunshot wound to the head. The news was confirmed to PEOPLE on Tuesday, January 28.
Maloney had posted a video on his Instagram Stories the day before his death, on January 27, where he was seen at a bar, making a rock hand gesture and mentioning a private party. He appeared to be in good spirits, but this was sadly the last known footage of him.
Born in Traverse City, Michigan, in 1981, Maloney was a multi-talented musician, skilled in guitar, violin, cello, and drums. He began his music career as the frontman for the prog-rock band Indulge, recording the album Tomorrow’s Another Day in 2005. Maloney also achieved success in the country music scene with original songs like “Hillbilly,” “Michigan Moonlight,” and “Living with No Directions,” which were featured on country radio stations in various states. In 2014, he gained national recognition on The Voice, where he earned a four-chair turn with his rendition of “Lights” by Journey. He joined Blake Shelton’s team and reached the top five finalists, later returning for the season finale.
Continuing his music career, Maloney released singles like “Don’t Put Me in a Box,” “Love with Nowhere to Go,” and “Toast to Tonight.” He performed at Blake Shelton’s Ole Red venue in 2024 and shared the stage with artists like Tim McGraw, Morgan Wallen, and Usher.
