The Vista del Lago boys varsity basketball team needs to focus on playoffs after loss against Rio Americano on Feb. 15.

According to head coach Tim Weir, the boys went into this game with the wrong mindset, but there were lessons to be taken from the loss. “You can’t take anyone lightly and you always need to be prepared to compete and give your best effort,” said Weir. “Defense. If you can’t stop the other team from scoring, you will be in for a long night.”

The players also recognized their own need of effort on the defensive end. “We lacked the defensive intensity that we needed to win,” said varsity co-captain, William Fitzpatrick.

“We need to play better defense going into playoffs,” said senior forward, Chris Fairchild.

The loss definitely took a toll on the entire school. “I think it’s fair to say that we were all disappointed on the outcome of the game,” said head of the student section, Peter Palasti.

It is important to remember that the Eagles are still Capital Athletic League co-champions, even with the loss against Rio Americano.

Their first playoff game against Fairfield is on Feb. 22, so they must stay focused.

The team is looking to use this loss as a driving factor for their first playoff game against Fairfield. “All we can do now is improve and go into playoffs fired up,” said Fitzpatrick.
