No More Waiting! CVS App Now Lets You Unlock Locked Shelves Yourself
Tired of waiting for store employees to unlock basic items? CVS is changing the game with a new app feature that lets customers open theft-proof cabinets themselves!

No more waiting around for a store worker to unlock your deodorant or shampoo—CVS is making shopping faster and easier with a new app feature.
CVS Health just launched an upgraded version of its mobile app, and one of its coolest new features lets customers unlock theft-proof cabinets on their own. This means no more long waits for employees to retrieve items. The feature is currently being tested in three New York City stores: 630 Lexington Ave., 540 Amsterdam Ave., and 158 Bleecker St.
Many drugstores in the city, including CVS, have resorted to locking up products to prevent theft. While this helps stop shoplifters, it has also frustrated honest shoppers, some of whom have reported waiting up to 40 minutes just to grab basic items like toothpaste or body wash.
Now, with the updated CVS Health app, customers at these select stores can simply connect to the store’s Wi-Fi, enable Bluetooth, and use the app to unlock the cabinets themselves—no employee needed.
Tilak Mandadi, executive vice president at CVS Health, understands the frustration. “People really, really dislike locked cabinets,” he told the media, explaining that the company is focused on improving the shopping experience.
CVS isn’t stopping there. The company plans to expand this feature to 10 to 15 more stores soon, including several on the West Coast.
But that’s not all the new CVS Health app has to offer. It now allows customers to manage their prescriptions, schedule doctor appointments, and access important health benefits. There’s even an AI-powered search tool to help find items quickly, along with health articles from Everyday Health and meditation exercises from Headspace.
“Our working title was ‘the super app,’” Mandadi revealed, emphasizing that CVS wants to make health care more accessible and convenient for everyone.
In a statement to the media, Mandadi added, “The CVS Health app will make it easier for our customers to access and manage their health and care, save time and money, and make informed decisions about their health.”
For New Yorkers shopping at CVS, this update could be a game-changer—no more waiting, no more hassle, just a smoother, faster experience.
