Folsom High School Theater’s fall production of “The Pajama Game” is full of laughs and stunning performances by students in Folsom’s own community, promising a night of entertainment.

“The Pajama Game” is a musical based on the 1953 novel “7 ½ Cents” by Richard Bissell. The musical tells the story of a pajama factory called Sleep Tite and the battle between the temporary owner, Myron Hasler, played by Jordan Remington, against the factory workers. The workers are in the midst of a fight for a seven and a half cent raise that other employees in the garment industry are receiving, but Hasler refuses to give it to them.

The show is directed by Tamara Mosier, musically directed by Ginger Ekroth, and choreographed by Cindy Rosefield. Thanks to Mosier, Ekroth, and Rosefield, all scenes– even with only one character on stage–are engaging and realistic, utilizing the space of the stage effectively. The set for the entire show is simple–just sets of walls and tables and chairs with minor details–but it carries across the scene well, letting the actors’ talent shine through without distractions.

Caiden Falco, in his role as Sid Sorokin, the new superintendent at Sleep Tite, performs spectacularly, turning Sid from a name on a piece of paper into a tangible and realistic character, pulling the audience into the story. He portrays the flaws and positives of the character’s well, making the character someone the audience can connect with, even in a small way.

On top of his acting, Falco also blows the audience away with his voice during the musical numbers of the show. One of his most notable performances is during the song “A New Town is a Blue Town,” a solo. Falco captivates the audience with his voice, conveying the emotion of the song. Despite the number being one of the most soulful and slow in the show, it is one of the most impactful and stunning numbers.

Despite the story as a whole being relatively tame, there are a couple of scenes that are somewhat suggestive in nature. While nothing is shown on screen or talked about in detail, sexual themes are implied and may not be suitable for younger audiences.

Another aspect to think about when bringing younger people to the show is the treatment of women. Throughout the story, some of the women are treated unfairly and not allowed to be their own person, or are sought after only because they are women and not because of their personality. Although the actions and words carried out by the characters of the musical was seen as normal for the setting’s timeframe, it is still disturbing but can serve as a good lesson for children.

Overall, the show is impressive and thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish. The acting and musical performances by the students are incredible, and the fantastic directing and set complements it perfectly. “The Pajama Game” is sure to provide a night full of entertainment and is not a show you want to miss.

The last set of performances are November 16-18, 2017. All performances are at 7 p.m. and tickets can be bought at the link below, as well as the box office.
