The Friday Night Live, led by advisor Terry Blesso and president Jamie Jordan, spearheaded the Everyday Leadership lesson and movement on campus.

On March 12, 2014, Vista del Lago High School launched an Everyday Leadership through Kindness initiative.

The movement started in advisory classes, where the whole school watched an inspirational TEDx talk on “Everyday leadership.” The video tells the story of a college student who changed a peer’s life through a simple gesture involving the gift of a lollipop.
Following the advisory session, teachers distributed two Dum Dums to each of the students who continually make a difference on campus through simple acts of compassion. The recognized students would then enjoy one, and pass the other on to a peer for similar reasons.
The Friday Night Live club and its adviser, Terry Blesso, spearheaded this project.  The organization aims to promote a healthy lifestyle and a positive school environment.
“I am hoping that people become more present in their daily interactions,” Blesso said. “I know that we are so connected with social media, email and texting that having a meaningful conversation is often uncomfortable and not common.  If we slow down and value the quality relationships we have, they will be much more rewarding.”
Senior Elizabeth McClain received a lollipop under the ideal circumstances described by Blesso. A friend gave her one, saying McClain’s presence makes her happy.
“What I think of [the] Everyday Leadership through Kindness initiative is that [it] makes people want to be kind back to each other,” McClain said. “Also, it can inspire people to do things that they didn’t believe they would have before.”
