The elephant suddenly charged at the tourist and trampled him. Park authorities quickly responded to help the victim’s family. The identity of the deceased has not been released, and an investigation is underway.
Officials urged the public not to share any photos or videos of the incident out of respect for the victim’s family. The South African National Parks (SANParks) Board and Management expressed their condolences to the grieving family and friends.
Tourist Tried to Protect Grandchildren
According to South African news outlet IOL, the victim was reportedly trying to protect his grandchildren. The family had stepped out of their vehicle when the elephant, which was hidden in the bushes nearby, suddenly attacked.
Safety Warnings at Kruger National Park
Kruger National Park is one of Africa’s most popular wildlife destinations, attracting around two million visitors each year. It is home to the “Big Five”—elephants, lions, leopards, rhinos, and buffaloes.
Visitors can explore the park through guided tours or self-drive options. However, the park strongly warns guests to remain in their vehicles unless they are at designated safe areas.
“When you leave your vehicle, you step into the territory of wild animals,” the park’s website states. “Inside your car, animals do not see you as a threat, allowing you to observe them safely. Once outside, you become vulnerable. Even if no animals are visible, dangers like hidden snakes may still be present.”
Similar Incidents in Other Parks
This is not the first time such an event has happened. In 2023, an American tourist lost her life in Zambia’s Kafue National Park after an aggressive bull elephant attacked her safari vehicle. The animal flipped the vehicle over, killing the 80-year-old woman and injuring others.
